Use weight, not volume, for meat and base mix. 1 US cup of water is 237 g. The 1 lb and 5 lb columns are the same recipe scaled to whole packages of meat.

Method

  1. Weigh the raw meat for your batch size and put it in a large pot.
  2. Add the measured water and mix well, breaking up any clumps so everything cooks evenly.
  3. Bring to a boil on high. As soon as it boils, turn the heat down to a gentle simmer for 5–7 minutes, until no raw meat remains. Turn the burner off.
  4. Stir in the weighed Easy Simmer base mix; the fruit and vegetables start rehydrating right away. Let it cool until safe to touch, then mix very well into a smooth, clump-free food.
  5. Portion daily servings into food-safe containers or resealable bags. Refrigerate 3–4 days' worth and freeze the rest as daily packs.

Simmer the meat in the recipe water: grocery-store meat is sold to be cooked, and the broth carries the nutrients into the base mix.

Before you start

Follow the meat specification. Each Easy Simmer recipe sets its own base-mix dose for its meat. Swapping a different meat into the same grams changes calcium, phosphorus, zinc, iron and copper, so use the recipe written for the meat you buy.

Transition over a week. Days 1–2: 25% new food. Days 3–4: 50%. Days 5–6: 75%. Day 7: all new. Hold a stage an extra day if stools soften. The switching guide has the details.

Kitchen food safety. Wash hands, utensils and surfaces that touched raw meat before they touch anything else. Refrigerate or freeze within an hour of cooking. Thaw in the refrigerator.
